Common Ceramic Tile Classifications

Our company provides complete solutions and tool kits for ceramic tiles with different manufacturing processes, water absorption rates, and uses.

Ceramic tiles can be categorized into several types, each with distinct characteristics:

01/

Glazed Tiles: These have a surface that is treated with a glaze, offering a wide range of colors and patterns. They are good for slip resistance but may not be as durable as polished tiles.

02/

Unglazed Tiles: With a non-glazed surface, these tiles are known for their durability and slip resistance, though they generally have fewer color and pattern options compared to glazed tiles.

03/

Polished Tiles: Made from full-bodied clay and then polished to a smooth finish, these tiles are hard-wearing and durable but may have pores that can stain. They usually have a low water absorption rate, less than 0.1%, and are also known as vitrified tiles.

04/

Vitrified Tiles: An upgraded version of polished tiles, these are fully vitrified, denser, and more resistant to scratches and stains. They have a very low water absorption rate and are quite slip-resistant.

05/

Crystal Stone Tiles: A high-end product with high hardness, resistance to bending and impact, and strong corrosion and stain resistance. They offer a variety of colors but are more expensive and have relatively lower strength.

06/

Full-Glazed Polished Tiles: These tiles have a rich variety of colors and a low water absorption rate, but they may not be as stain-resistant or durable as polished tiles.

07/

Porcelain Tiles: With a water absorption rate of less than or equal to 0.5%, these are high-density, high-strength tiles.

08/

Stoneware Tiles: These have a water absorption rate greater than 0.5% but less than or equal to 3%, making them slightly less hard-wearing than porcelain tiles.

09/

Fine Stoneware Tiles: With a water absorption rate greater than 3% but less than or equal to 6%

10/

Terracotta Tiles: A water absorption rate greater than 6% but less than or equal to 10%, these tiles often have good slip resistance.

11/

Earthenware Tiles: With a water absorption rate greater than 10%, these tiles are known for their lower durability.

12/

Marble Tiles: These mimic the texture, color, and feel of natural marble, offering a realistic decorative effect while avoiding the natural defects of marble.

13/

Jade Tiles: Imitating the texture of jade, these tiles offer the superior performance characteristics of ceramic tiles, such as low water absorption, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Problems and Solutions in the Production of Polished tiles

During the production process of polished tiles, several common issues can arise that may affect the quality and appearance of the tiles. Here are some of the common problems and their solutions:

1. Scratches

Linear grooves on the surface of the polished tile, usually caused by abrasive particles. Solutions include ensuring that all samples on the specimen holder have a uniform pattern of grinding marks and thoroughly cleaning the samples and specimen holder after each step.

2. Waviness

Plastic deformation of the sample surface can occur when inappropriate grinding materials, lubricants, or polishing cloths are used. Solutions involve checking the amount of lubricant used and employing larger abrasive particles.

3. Discoloration (Pseudocolor)

Abnormal coloring of the sample surface due to contact with foreign substances. Solutions include avoiding gaps between the sample and the resin during embedding and rinsing the polishing cloth with cold water during the final stages of polishing.

4. Deformation

Surface defects beneath the surface may exist after grinding, honing, or polishing. Solutions include improving the sample preparation method.

5. Edge Rounding

The use of highly resilient polishing cloths can lead to chamfering of the sample edges. Solutions involve protecting the edges during polishing and polishing as close to the center of the polishing plate as possible.

6. Relief (Embossing)

Different materials may have different wear rates and hardness, leading to relief effects. Solutions include providing a good grinding foundation and controlling the sample preparation time.

7. Spalling

Particles or grains on the sample surface are pulled off during grinding. Solutions include using a non-shedding polishing cloth and checking the sample.

8. Cracking

Fracture in brittle and multi-phase samples is known as cracking. Solutions involve controlling the energy used in processing

9. Contamination

Debris from other sources, not from the sample itself, that is deposited on the sample surface during mechanical grinding or polishing. Solutions include cleaning and drying the samples and changing the polishing cloth.

10. Abrasive Embedding

The phenomenon of free abrasive particles being pressed into the sample surface. Solutions involve controlling the sample preparation force and rinsing the samples.

11. Grinding Marks

Marks left on the sample surface by the random movement of abrasive particles on a hard surface. Solutions include using a highly elastic polishing cloth and increasing the grinding/polishing force appropriately.

12. Ink Penetration Depth

Insufficient vertical ink penetration depth can lead to quality defects in the product. Solutions include adding penetration aids to address the depth of penetration.

13. Body Cracks

Body cracks are common and can affect up to 40% of batch products. Solutions include adding penetration aids in the glaze line to enhance the uniformity of vertical ink penetration and surface diffusion, and adding a dryer before the firing kiln to ensure the moisture content meets production requirements.

14. Quality and Cost Issues

With the maturation of production technology and the advancement of production equipment, high output and cost control have become important considerations. Solutions involve comprehensively considering cost control and optimizing in actual production.

Choosing the appropriate diamond tool for ceramic tiles will effectively reduce production failures and the yield of ceramic tiles. Our company has extensive experience and stable product performance, which can help ceramic tile production factories greatly improve production efficiency and increase yield.
