Q: How do you maintain an oil stone?

A: If your stone is already aging, you can bring it back to optimal functioning by using WD-40 and steel wool to get rid of dirt and oil. It is important you flatten your stone not less than every 10 sharpening sessions, which in turn will help keep it even and get rid of embedded, stubborn metal fillings.

Q: Is it better to use water or oil on a sharpening stone?

A: Many modern sharpening stones will work fine with water. If yours does, that is the preferred way to go. On one that doesn't, low viscosity, resin free, non polimerizing mineral oil (sold under various names, like 'universal oil', 'sewing machine oil' and so on) will be your best bet.

Q: Do oil stones need to be flattened?

A: We recommend flattening them at the beginning of every sharpening session-it's a 15-second job in most cases. Flatten oilstones about every 10 sessions. Another benefit of flattening your stones: You'll remove embedded metal filings that impair the stone's sharpening action.
