Since ancient times, diamonds have been regarded as an extremely valuable ornament. However, with the development of modern industrial technology, the unique mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of diamond have been gradually excavated, turning it from a simple process to an important industrial raw material.
Significance of metallization of diamond surface
But no matter how excellent the diamond itself is, it will be hard to sound alone --- because the particle size of synthetic diamond is so small that almost all applications require crystal bonding or implantation into the substrate. However, diamond has high interfacial energy with most metals, ceramics, etc., so the bonding force between diamond and matrix is poor and diamond is easy to fall off at early stage.
At present, diamond sawing tools are mostly manufactured by powder metallurgy. Sintering temperature is generally up to 900 C. When diamond is heated to about 700 C in air, it begins to oxidize and lose weight and reduce pressure. Diamond graphitization takes place above 1000 C, which greatly affects the service effect of diamond.
Therefore, how to improve the oxidation resistance and prevent graphitization of diamond is the key factor to improve the service life of diamond tools in high temperature field. At present, metal coating on diamond surface is generally used at home and abroad to reduce the interfacial energy between diamond and matrix, and form a stable chemical-metallurgical bond between diamond and binder through this layer of metal. Binders play the following important roles:
1 Dispersion and control of diamond particles
2 To expose diamond particles to a certain extent;
3 Prevent diamond particles from falling off prematurely;
4. Spread the heat generated during the working process quickly to withstand and disperse the impact caused by diamond working.
