As the calendar turns to 2026, China's cubic boron nitride (CBN) industry celebrates its 60th anniversary. Sixty years may feel fleeting in the grand timeline of industrial civilization, yet for an advanced material and its supporting industrial chain, this span tells a remarkable story of growth-starting from nothing, overcoming technical barriers, and evolving into a globally competitive powerhouse.
Back in 1966, researchers at the Zhengzhou Research Institute of Abrasives, Grinding and Cutting pioneered China's first synthetic CBN single crystal on rudimentary high-pressure equipment. At that time, few could have imagined how transformative this tiny crystalline material would become. Decades later, it has underpinned a multi-billion-dollar domestic industry and secured China's dominant position in the global superhard materials market. More importantly, CBN has quietly become a core foundational material driving China's upgrade from a traditional manufacturing hub to a high-end intelligent manufacturing leader.

In the 1960s, Western countries had already mastered mature CBN synthesis technologies and imposed strict technical blockades worldwide. Unlike diamond abrasives, which chemically react with ferrous metals at high temperatures and wear rapidly, CBN features outstanding thermal stability and chemical inertness. It remains the most reliable abrasive solution for precision machining of hardened steel, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys. At that time, the lack of independent CBN production capability left China's high-precision grinding industry heavily reliant on imported materials. Through countless trials and setbacks under extremely limited experimental conditions, Chinese research teams successfully broke the foreign monopoly and filled the domestic gap for superhard CBN materials.
In its early stages, China's CBN technology remained confined to laboratory output, with low production capacity and unstable crystal consistency. Thanks to decades of continuous technical iteration, domestic researchers have achieved major breakthroughs in catalyst formulation, high-pressure synthesis processes, and precise powder classification. The widespread adoption of domestically manufactured cubic presses further propelled CBN from laboratory experimentation to large-scale industrial production.
Today, China owns the world's most complete CBN industrial ecosystem, covering raw material synthesis, fine powder processing, and the production of high-end grinding tools and PCBN cutting inserts. Widely applied in new energy vehicle transmission parts, aero-engine components, high-precision bearings, and mold manufacturing, domestic CBN products have steadily replaced imported solutions in high-speed dry grinding and hard cutting scenarios, effectively lowering manufacturing costs while improving overall processing accuracy and efficiency.

Globally, the CBN competition landscape continues to intensify. European, American, Japanese, and Korean industry leaders maintain solid advantages in foundational material research. International giants such as Element Six, Sandvik, and Sumitomo Electric focus heavily on high-purity nano CBN, binder-free PCBN, and gradient composite polycrystalline materials. They dominate high-value sectors including aerospace component machining and semiconductor ultra-precision processing, relying on comprehensive patent layouts and mature application solutions. Meanwhile, overseas institutions are actively developing low-energy and eco-friendly HPHT synthesis technologies, striving to seize the next round of sustainable manufacturing opportunities.
While China leads the world in CBN production volume and market share, the industry still faces obvious structural gaps. Mid-to-low-end CBN products feature sufficient capacity and cost advantages, but high-end ultra-fine powders, large-size high-toughness PCBN blanks, and specialized composite binders still require further upgrading. Core high-end markets for extreme-condition precision machining are still occupied by international brands.
Looking ahead, China's CBN industry is shifting from scale expansion to high-quality technological breakthroughs. Future development will focus on independent research of low-defect large-size CBN single crystals, nano-level microcrystalline materials, and green low-carbon synthesis techniques. Beyond traditional grinding and cutting fields, Chinese CBN manufacturers will further expand applications in robotics, new energy equipment, and semiconductor precision processing. The industry transformation will also move from simple material supply to integrated solutions that combine materials, machining processes, and on-site technical support.
Sixty years of development has witnessed China's CBN industry grow from scratch to global prominence. Moving forward, continuous industry-university-research collaboration will accelerate the industrialization of cutting-edge technologies and bridge the remaining high-end material gaps. As a core superhard material, Chinese-made CBN will keep empowering high-end manufacturing, delivering more reliable, efficient, and cost-effective machining solutions for global industrial upgrading.
