In the field of superhard material processing, diamond paste is an indispensable tool. It is a soft abrasive made of diamond micro-powder abrasive and paste binder, also known as loose abrasive. It is used to grind hard and brittle materials to obtain a high surface finish. So, what exactly is diamond paste? How does it work?
1. Definition and working principle
Diamond grinding paste is made of diamond micro-powder abrasive and paste binder.
Among them, diamond micro-powder is the main body, which is bonded together by abrasive to form a paste. Diamond particles are superhard materials with extremely high hardness and wear resistance. The paste binder has a good lubricating effect. During the grinding process, the diamond particles inside the grinding paste continue to roll, producing two effects of extrusion and cutting, causing a large number of indentations on the surface of the workpiece. The raised indentations are cut by the subsequent abrasive particles, and the grinding chips are continuously formed and removed, so that the surface of the workpiece is flat and smooth. At the same time, the abrasive can fix the diamond particles together to form a paste, which is convenient for use and control. During use, diamond grinding paste usually needs to be operated in conjunction with a grinder or manual grinding. It is mainly used for polishing and grinding of hard and brittle materials. Let's take a look at an example of practical application. Suppose there is a piece of cemented carbide that needs to be processed, and we use diamond grinding paste to process it.
First, we apply diamond grinding paste to the surface of cemented carbide, and then use a grinder to grind it. During the grinding process, the diamond particles continuously scrape and grind the surface of the cemented carbide, making it gradually smooth and flat. At the same time, the abrasive firmly bonds the diamond particles together, ensuring the uniformity and stability of the grinding effect. After a few minutes of grinding, the surface of the cemented carbide presents high-quality finish and flatness, and the processing efficiency and quality are significantly improved.
2. Classification of grinding pastes
- Classification by solvent type Diamond grinding pastes are divided into oil-soluble grinding pastes and water-soluble grinding pastes according to the type of grinding paste binder. Oil-soluble grinding pastes are composed of grease, stearic acid, and some auxiliary materials. They have good wettability, strong grinding force, low grinding heat, and are mainly used for processing hard alloys and their parts with high finish requirements, instruments, measuring tools, cutting tools, and abrasives. Water-soluble grinding pastes are composed of some alcohols and some auxiliary materials. They have low viscosity, are easy to remove, have high processing efficiency, and are less corrosive to metals. They can be used in harsh grinding environments. They are mainly used for processing metals, circuit boards, glass, ceramics, gemstones, agates and other hard and brittle materials.
- Classification according to the type of micropowder used According to the different diamond micropowders used, it can be divided into polycrystalline diamond grinding paste and single crystal diamond grinding paste.
3. Selection of diamond grinding paste
The selection of diamond grinding paste is mainly determined by the requirements of the workpiece finish, the processing efficiency and the original finish of the workpiece. If the excess is large and the processing efficiency is high, a coarser grain size can be selected; if the excess is small and the finish is high, a finer grain size can be selected.

4. Main application scenarios of diamond abrasive paste
In the field of mechanical processing, diamond abrasive paste is widely used in the processing of various superhard materials. It is suitable for the grinding and polishing of measuring tools, cutting tools, optical instruments and other high-finish workpieces made of high-hardness materials such as glass, ceramics, gems, and cemented carbide. It is also suitable for special-shaped workpieces made of the above materials that are difficult to process with grinding wheel tools. It can effectively improve processing efficiency and quality, reduce tool wear and reduce costs. In the construction industry, diamond abrasive paste is used for the processing and polishing of materials such as stone and glass, which can produce smooth surfaces and high-quality finished products. Diamond abrasive paste is also used for grinding and polishing of tungsten steel molds, optical molds, injection molds, etc.; grinding and polishing during metallographic analysis experiments; grinding and polishing of dental materials (dentures).
Diamond abrasive paste is a very practical tool that plays an important role in the processing of superhard materials. By understanding the basic concepts, characteristics, application scenarios and working principles of diamond abrasive paste, we can better understand and use this tool to improve processing efficiency and quality
