Do you know a diamond segment? What is a diamond segment?

A diamond segment is the working part of various diamond cutting or grinding tools (such as saw blades, drill bits, and grinding wheels) that directly participates in cutting. It is a composite material formed by combining diamond particles with a metal matrix through a powder metallurgy process.

1. Core Structure and Working Principle

 

Diamond segments typically consist of two basic components:

  • Diamond particles: These act as the cutting element. They are the hardest substance in nature and are responsible for grinding and crushing the material being processed;
  • Metal matrix: These act as the binder. They are typically an alloy made from a mixture of metal powders such as cobalt, iron, copper, and tin. Their functions are crucial;
  • Diamond holding: They securely enclose the diamond particles, much like cement holds rebar.
  • Orderly shedding: The wear rate of the matrix must match the wear rate of the diamonds. When the outer layer of diamonds becomes blunt, the matrix also wears to a certain extent, causing the blunt diamonds to fall off, revealing the fresh, sharp diamonds within. This process, known as "blade-out," ensures the cutting bit's self-sharpening properties, ensuring continued sharpness.
