Polishing marble with Diamond Polishing Pad(is also called soft grinding pads or flexible polishing pad) is a very common technique, which can restore its crystal clear texture whether it is a newly installed countertop or an old countertop renovation. Marble material is relatively soft, and compared to granite, there are some slight differences in operation.

The following is a detailed and safe operation guide.

Core principle

Using a set of Diamond Polishing Pad from coarse to fine (low to high mesh), polishing step by step, each process eliminates the scratches left by the previous process, ultimately making the marble surface smooth like a mirror, producing uniform reflection of light, and presenting a glossy appearance.

Step 1: Safety and Preparation Work

safety first!

  • Goggles: prevent polishing slurry from splashing into the eyes.
  • Dust mask (N95 or above): Although there is less wet abrasion dust, dust may still be generated during cleaning to protect the respiratory tract.
  • Non slip gloves: Machines and equipment can be very slippery.
  • Waterproof shoes/rubber shoes: The work area can be very wet.
  • Hearing protection (optional): The machine can be worn for prolonged use.

Tools and materials:

  1. Machine: It is recommended to use a handheld polishing machine with adjustable speed. The rotation speed of the angle grinder is too high (tens of thousands of revolutions), which is difficult to control and can easily cause pits on the marble. It is only recommended for experienced personnel to use it for small area edge treatment. The polishing machine speed can usually be controlled between 0-3000 revolutions per minute, which is safer.
  2. Diamond Polishing Pad(Flexible polishing pad) Set: A set of grinding pads designed specifically for marble (usually including 50 #, 100 #, 200 #, 400 #, 800 #, 1500 #, 3000 #, polishing pads). Attention: Marble has low Mohs hardness and does not require coarse grinding discs like granite (such as 50 #). If it is only for polishing rather than repairing deep scratches, it can be started from 100 # or 200 #.
  3. Backing Pad: Velcro style tray used for attaching soft grinding pads.
  4. Water source: spray bottle (small area) or small flow nozzle connected to water pipe (large area).
  5. Cleaning tools: wipers, water suction machines, large buckets, and sponges.
  6. Marble specific protective agent (optional but strongly recommended): used for sealing and protection after polishing.

Step 2: Polishing Process (Step by Step)

1. Surface preparation

  • Thoroughly clean: Ensure that the marble surface is free of hard objects such as dust, gravel, nails, metal debris, etc. Any small hard object can cause serious scratches during polishing.
  • Inspection and repair: Check for cracks or missing corners and use marble specific adhesive for repair.
  • Surrounding protection: Use plastic film to protect cabinets, appliances, etc. from mud pollution.

2. Installation and wetting

  • Install the adhesive tray firmly onto the polishing machine.
  • Take out the starting grinding disc (such as 100 #) and press it firmly to evenly adhere it to the tray.
  • Soak the Polishing Pad in water for a few minutes to fully absorb water, which can extend its lifespan and improve efficiency.

3. Wet grinding and polishing (key step)

  • Thoroughly wet: Before starting, spray water on the polishing area to thoroughly wet it.
  • Maintain moisture: During the polishing process, it is necessary to continuously spray water onto the polishing area. Water is the friend of marble polishing. It can cool down, lubricate, and take away debris, preventing "burning" (high temperatures can cause the marble surface to lose its luster and turn white).
  • Correct technique:

   1) Start the machine and set it to medium speed (e.g. 1000-1500 rpm).

   2) Place the machine flat on the surface of the stone and slowly move it along overlapping circular or "∞" shaped paths.

   3) Apply gentle and even pressure. Marble is very soft, so let the weight of the grinding disc and machine be the main pressure.              Excessive pressure can cause uneven concave surfaces and significantly shorten the lifespan of the Polishing Pad.

4)After polishing a small area (about 0.5 square meters), use a wiper to scrape open a piece and check if the scratches are uniform and if the deep scratches have been eliminated.

  • Cleaning and inspection: After ensuring that all scratches on the previous level have been completely removed from the current numbered Polishing Pad, use a water suction machine to thoroughly dry the mud.

4. Replace the Polishing Pad in sequence (never skip the number!)

  • Thoroughly clean: Before replacing the next finer Polishing Pad, it is necessary to:

    1) Turn off and unplug the machine power.

    2) Thoroughly clean all mud on the surface with a wiper and water suction machine.

    3) Rinse the surface with clean water and scrape/absorb dry again.

    4) Carefully clean the old grinding debris adhered to the tray with a plastic scraper! This is the most crucial step in preventing              cross contamination and creating new scratches.

  • Step by step replacement: Replace step by step according to the numbering sequence and repeat the polishing process. For example: 100 # → 200 # → 400 # → 800 # → 1500 # → 3000 # → Buff polishing pad.
  • Observation of changes: You will see that as the number of Polishing Pad increases, the surface gradually becomes finer from frosted to glossy (usually starting to shine after 800 # -1500 #).

5. Final cleaning and drying

  • After final polishing with the finest Polishing Pad (3000 # or buff polishing pad), thoroughly clean the surface.
  • Use a water absorbing machine and a clean towel to dry the surface as much as possible.
  • Allow the marble to dry completely naturally for at least 24 hours. Only after complete drying can you see the true final glossiness.

6. Apply sealant

  • Marble is a porous material that is highly susceptible to staining.
  • After it is completely dry, evenly apply marble specific penetrating protective agent.
  • Protective agents can penetrate pores, forming a protective layer that enhances luster and effectively resists the penetration of liquids such as water, oil, tea, coffee, etc.

Special precautions (for marble)

  • Gentle operation: The marble floor is soft, and excessive force should be avoided. Patience is more important than strength.
  • Strictly prevent pollution: Cleaning work requires higher standards than polishing granite, and any negligence can lead to the loss of previous efforts.
  • Avoid acidic substances: Marble is mainly composed of calcium carbonate, which can undergo chemical reactions when exposed to acid, resulting in surface corrosion and loss of luster. It is strictly prohibited to use any acidic cleaning agents (such as toilet cleaner, vinegar) for cleaning.
  • Try first, do later: If it's renovation, first test the process in an inconspicuous corner (such as under the sink) to determine the most suitable starting point for the polishing pad.
