I. Diamond Grinding & Polishing Plate
Diamond grinding & polishing plates are made by sintering diamond abrasive materials. Because they are not widely used in our industry and have a complex numbering system, the numbering details are omitted.
- Advantages: Suitable for most stone grinding machines; fast grinding speed, good wear resistance, strong abrasive particle retention, high grinding efficiency, and low grinding cost, making them an ideal grinding tool.
- Disadvantages: Can easily damage the stone, causing problems for subsequent processes; the numbering system for subsequent grinding wheels is quite complex.
II. Magnesite and Resin Abrasive Blocks
Magnesite and resin abrasive blocks are manufactured by using magnesite and resin as binding and filling materials, and then casting and baking the abrasive material into shape. They are widely used in stone processing production lines and are also used by many professional stone restoration companies.
There are two types of numbering systems: one based on mesh size and the other on numerical codes:
- Mesh numbering: 36 mesh, 60 mesh, 120 mesh, 240 mesh, 400 mesh, 800 mesh, polishing grade
- Numerical numbering: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 0 (polishing grade)
- Advantages: High and stable grinding quality; good adaptability and strong controllability; excellent quality at a reasonable price.
- Disadvantages: The polishing grade (0) of domestically produced abrasive blocks has unstable quality and poor polishing performance; imported abrasive blocks are generally more expensive.
III. Stone Restoration Pads and Wet Polishing Pads
Stone restoration pads and wet polishing pads are also known as diamond polishing pads because their abrasive material contains diamond micro-powder. We often refer to stone restoration pads as hard pads and wet polishing pads as soft pads. (Wet polishing pads are widely used for grinding edges, corners, and irregularly shaped surfaces.) Due to their portability and ease of use, they are favored by most stone restoration companies.
They are categorized by two types of numbering systems: international and domestic:
- International numbering: 30, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000
- Domestic numbering: 30, 50, 150, 300, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000#
The last pad in both sequences is a BUFF pad. Exceptions apply for special requirements. From the above data, it can be seen that the grit size of the next pad is basically twice that of the previous pad. Theoretically, this formula design ensures that the next polishing pad eliminates the scratches left by the previous one.
- Advantages: Strong practicality and wide application; convenient to carry and use.
- Disadvantages: Poor grinding and polishing performance; the surface of the polished stone appears dry (faded, whitened); high-quality products are expensive and not cost-effective.
IV. Summary
In summary, it is clear that, in addition to the selection of machinery and equipment, the selection of abrasives and grinding tools is also crucial, as it directly affects a company's output and profitability. Specifically, for leveling and smoothing edges, it is best to use abrasives with high rigidity and fast grinding speed, such as diamond grinding discs; magnesium oxide and resin grinding stones (blocks), and stone renovation pads. Using wet grinding pads is strongly discouraged! Because wet grinding pads have poor rigidity, they can easily cause pitting (e.g., in "Colorful Clouds" and "Heavenly Maiden Scattering Flowers" patterns) and fish-scale patterns (e.g., in "Large Flower Green" granite) in stone; and can easily cause protrusions in terrazzo. These will directly affect the acceptance of flatness, as well as the gloss, clarity, and overall grinding effect and aesthetics.
Eliminating scratches should also use abrasives with high rigidity, as this removes scratches thoroughly and quickly; flexible grinding pads are less effective, slower, and prone to leaving residual scratches.
For polishing and brightening stone, flexible grinding pads can be used.
Furthermore, different grinding objects require different abrasives and grinding tools. When our industry was just starting, our grinding objects were limited, mostly marble and a small amount of granite. Now, however, marble, granite, artificial stone, ceramics (polished tiles, vitrified tiles), microcrystalline stone, artificial composite stone, artificial quartz stone, terrazzo, cement floors, glass, etc., are all objects we grind.
With social development, technological progress, and improved living standards, we believe that all hard materials may become objects of our grinding and renovation. The key is to choose the right abrasives and grinding tools. For example, if you use marble abrasives and grinding tools on microcrystalline stone, imagine the result. The result will inevitably be: either it won't grind at all, or the scratches will not be completely removed after grinding. This is because you have chosen the wrong abrasive material. The abrasive material's binder is too strong, the abrasive tool is too hard, the abrasive particles are difficult to detach, there is insufficient lubrication, new cutting edges cannot be formed, and the abrasive material has poor self-sharpening properties; the removal rate is also mismatched with the workpiece being ground.
