The Whampoa Of China's Abrasives Industry: Inside Henan University Of Technology

In China's bonded-abrasives and superhard-materials industry, one university is affectionately known as the "Whampoa Military Academy" - a shorthand for the cradle of the sector's talent. That university is Henan University of Technology (HUT) in Zhengzhou. Its story goes back to 1956.

1. Origins: built to supply China No.2 Grinding Wheel Factory

In the early years of the People's Republic, industrialization was the national priority. Starting in 1953, the First Five-Year Plan brought the 156 Soviet-aided projects online. Because bonded abrasives are essential precision-machining tools - and a must for defense manufacturing - Chinese leadership asked the Soviet side to add two more projects, with the abrasives plant ranked first on the list.

After lengthy negotiations, an entire East German grinding-wheel plant was relocated to Zhengzhou - what became State-owned Factory 422, later China No.2 Grinding Wheel Factory, and today's White Dove Abrasives. It is widely regarded as the cradle of China's bonded-abrasives industry.

To supply that factory and the wider industry with qualified engineers, the First Ministry of Machine Building founded Zhengzhou Machine Manufacturing School in 1956 and set up a grinding discipline - the only program of its kind in the country at the time. Marshals and party leaders including Nie Rongzhen, Liu Shaoqi and Zhu De later inspected the No.2 factory and praised the talent the school was producing.

2. Evolution: from a grinding discipline to a materials school

  • 1956: Zhengzhou Machine Manufacturing School, grinding discipline established;
  • 1983: renamed Zhengzhou Mechanical Engineering College; the abrasives engineering department was formed, with majors in bonded-abrasive tool manufacturing and superhard materials & products;
  • 2004: Zhengzhou Institute of Engineering merged with Zhengzhou Industrial College to form Henan University of Technology; the abrasives department grew into today's School of Materials Science and Engineering.

3. Today: the only program of its kind in China

Even today, HUT's superhard-materials & products direction and bonded-abrasive tool manufacturing direction remain the only dedicated programs of their kind among Chinese universities. The materials-science major was approved as a national first-class undergraduate major construction point in 2020.

The school hosts a deep bench of provincial platforms: the Henan Engineering Laboratory of High-Temperature Wear-Resistant Materials, the Henan Engineering Laboratory of Superhard Grinding Composites, the Henan Key-Open Laboratory of Superhard Materials, the University Engineering Technology Center for Superhard Materials & Products, and the Henan Engineering Technology Research Center for Ultra-Precision Grinding & Polishing.

4. Why "Whampoa"?

Across six-plus decades, this school has produced a steady stream of technical backbones and managers for China's bonded-abrasives and superhard-materials sector - from White Dove to Huanghe Whirlwind, from the Sanmo Institute to the chief engineers on factory floors. The "Whampoa" nickname is a plainspoken recognition of that outsized role in training the industry's talent.

5. An industry veteran's personal note

Let me say a few words from personal experience. I have been in the diamond-tools business for 20 years now, and over those two decades I have lost count of how many HUT graduates I have worked alongside. Technical backbones at our own company, formulation engineers we have collaborated with, peers I meet at trade shows - many of them are HUT alumni.

Back when I was still working for someone else, I visited HUT several times for campus recruitment. My honest impressions: the campus is pleasant, and the canteen serves genuinely good food - for someone always traveling on business and living out of hotel restaurants, a hot meal in the student canteen left a strong positive memory. But more than the surroundings, what won me over was the graduates themselves. HUT students have a solid technical foundation and real hands-on ability; they pick up work on the shop floor and in the lab quickly, rather than just repeating textbook knowledge. Several of the HUT graduates we hired over the years have grown into key members of our production and technical teams.

Later, when I started my own diamond-tools business, my contact with HUT deepened. Whenever we needed to adjust a bond formula, improve a manufacturing process or develop a new product, we ended up talking things through with faculty from the School of Materials Science and engineers at the affiliated research institutes - iterating and testing together. HUT is not just a feeder of people for our industry; for a manufacturer like us, it has also become a technical partner we can rely on.

A university earns the "Whampoa" nickname not just because of its long history or its unique major, but because its alumni have actually put down roots and carried the industry forward. After twenty years on the job, that is something we feel in our bones.
