On April 11, it was learned from China Electronics Technology Group Co., Ltd. that the quantum research team of the Key Laboratory of CETCA and the Key Laboratory of Quantum Information of the Chinese Academy of Sciences successfully developed the first diamond nitrogen vacancy color center maser in China.

What is a microwave maser?

Microwave maser is a quantum system that amplifies weak microwave signals and is applied in fields such as deep space communication and biomedical detection. Traditional microwave masers require ultra-low temperature environments and are bulky and costly. The use of diamond materials in microwave masers has the advantages of small size, low cost, and continuous and stable operation at room temperature. Diamond nitrogen vacancy color centers are naturally occurring defects in which electrons have spin triplet states and can be precisely manipulated by microwaves and lasers. The research team successfully developed a diamond microwave maser by utilizing and manipulating this natural defect.
