The end of the Spring Festival holiday and returning to work is a day full of ceremony in traditional customs. This is not only the end of the holiday, but also the beginning of bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new, praying for a smooth year.
Among these customs, the most core cultural connotation lies in people's expectations for a better life in the new year. They mostly reflect the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation, such as love for life, diligence, and wisdom.

What is "开工大吉" ?
The Chinese word for '开工大吉' means "Good luck with starting work"
'Good luck with starting work' is a common auspicious phrase and ceremony held by Chinese people at the end of the Spring Festival holiday and when resuming work or business.
We can understand it from both literal and connotative perspectives:
1. Literal meaning
- Start of work(开工): refers to the end of holidays, the opening of shops, the resumption of factory work, and the start of a new year's work for people.
- Da Ji(大吉): Refers to very auspicious and good luck. This is one of the most commonly used words for Chinese people to express blessings, hoping that things will go smoothly and there will be no obstacles.
Connected together, 'good luck in starting work' means wishing for a smooth and prosperous start to the new year's work.
2. The cultural connotations behind it
It is not just a sentence, but also represents a hopeful attitude and a customary sense of ceremony:
- Seeking a 'good start': Chinese people attach great importance to the beginning of things and believe that 'a good start is half the battle for success'. On the first day of construction, I say this in the hope of bringing good luck and smooth sailing for the entire year's work.
- Saying goodbye to the old and welcoming the new: By holding a groundbreaking ceremony (such as setting off firecrackers and distributing profits), people officially bid farewell to the holiday, leaving behind the past year's difficulties and dedicating themselves to the struggle of the new year with a new spirit.
- Unite people's hearts: On the start of work day, the boss gives employees a "start of work red envelope" (red envelope), and everyone says "start of work is good luck" to each other, which is a very humane interaction. It can enhance emotions and encourage everyone to work together with joy and anticipation.
So, when you hear or say 'good luck with starting work', you are actually sending a positive signal: the holiday is over, let's start the new year of struggle with good wishes and full of spirit.
